‘Castanea Sativa’ is a large sweet chestnut tree with a broad crown. The tree can reach an age of 400 years. The height of the trunk of the tree is about 200 cm, above which the branches begin. The trunk is twisted and has a bark full of grooves and crevices. Young branches are olive green but turn reddish brown afterwards. The elongated leaves are dark green, shiny with a serrated edge. Young leaves are hairy on the underside. The fruits are shiny brown nuts. There are two to four of them together in hard, yellow-brown, prickly shells. The sweet chestnuts that fall from the chestnut tree in the autumn are edible. After stripping the chestnut of its brown skin, you can eat it raw, roast it or boil it. Chestnuts are a lot less fat than other nuts. They do, however, contain the necessary carbohydrates, fibre and protein.
