Clematis montana var. rubens’ is a small-flowering but also abundantly flowering clematis that produces an abundance of soft pink, fragrant flowers in the spring. The clematis grows quickly and produces more and longer tendrils than most clematis. The climbing plant is perfect for covering a pergola, but it will also do well along a wall, fence or rack. It does need some help in climbing, as it does not attach itself. You can therefore lead it around a wire or mesh. Cold temperatures are not a problem for the Hardy climber, but it does lose its leaves. Place the clematis in full sun or half shade. If the clematis is in full sunlight, it is important that the roots stay out of the sun. Cover the root ball well and plant it 10 to 15 cm deep. After the flowering period, the plant can be pruned back to 50 cm. Pruning keeps the plant young and in shape, but pruning is not necessary.
