‘Hedera hibernica’ is one of the best known and most widely planted ivies. The reason for this is that it is very easy to maintain, grows quickly and stays nice and green in the winter. It is suitable for both sun and shade and grows in any type of soil. With its fresh green, spreading leaves, this plant is suitable for camouflaging a wall, brightening up a fence or covering a wire mesh fence. If there is nothing to climb, the stems crawl over the ground and form roots that enable them to cover large distances. This makes the ivy also suitable as a ground cover. Once the plant has climbed to the right height, pruning can begin immediately. By pruning the ‘Hedera hibernica’ you give the plant the signal to grow more in width. By repeating this, the young climber will get a faster leaf coverage and it will soon become nice and full. The ivy can be pruned all year round. Make sure that the ivy does not attach itself to the woodwork of your house, which will leave annoying marks when the vine is removed.
