‘Hydrangea petiolaris’ is a climbing hydrangea that blooms in June with umbels consisting of a core of fertile green flowers surrounded by white flowers that attract insects. The climbing hydrangea belongs to the group of self-adhesive climbers. This means that it climbs along a wall or fence with the adhesive roots it forms on the branches, just like the Hedera and Campsis do. It is important that you help this climbing plant on its way at the beginning. When it has found its way up, it will do the rest by itself. The climbing hydrangea is not very critical in terms of location. Therefore it is also suitable for shady places in the garden where most plants do not grow and flower very well. It is important that the soil is not too solid and heavy. It grows both vertically and horizontally and can therefore be guided in the desired shape and direction. Climbing hydrangeas can withstand pruning and it is best to do this after flowering or in the winter. Long shoots can be easily shortened. Cut off the branch just before a bud, otherwise you will have a lot of dead spots. Make sure that a young plant is firmly attached to the wall or fence until the plant has enough grip with its adhesive roots.
