Pyracantha coccinea Red Column’ is a Pyracantha and is ornamental all year round. In spring it has racemes of creamy white flowers and in summer and autumn these turn into beautiful bright red berries. The small leaves are shiny, dark green and the branches bear long spines. Birds love this plant. In spring, they like to make their nest in the plant, while in winter they can safely hide in it. Birds also find the berries very tasty. It can grow against a wall or fence, but then it needs support to climb and will need to be tied down with wire. The plant grows like an ordinary shrub and is not self-adhesive. Therefore, it can be used as a hedge, because it stays green in the winter. With good pruning and training, you can get the Pyracantha in any shape you want. Eventually, Pyracantha can reach a height of 4 metres. It can be pruned in the spring after flowering. Cut back a quarter of the branches. Do put on a pair of garden gloves against the prickles. Pyracantha has few soil requirements; any normal dry to moist, nutritious, humus-rich soil will do. This plant is also ideal for an urban environment, as it can withstand air pollution quite well.’
