‘Vaccinium corymbosum Sunshine Blue’ is also known as blueberry or American blueberry. It is a compact blueberry, the plant only grows about 80 cm high. The berries have a deliciously fresh taste and a beautiful sky-blue colour. You can eat them directly from the bush, but they are also very suitable for use in jam, cake or juice. The plant prefers a sunny/semi-shady spot and needs an acid soil to grow. Otherwise, the plant will produce little fruit or it may even die. The blueberry blossoms in May, pink with red buds that then turn into berries. The picking season starts in July. The blueberry remains green even in winter and does not lose its leaves. It is therefore less Hardy than Deciduous species and should be placed in a more sheltered spot. The blueberries contain anthocyanin, a substance that gives the berry its blue colour. This substance has a good effect on the heart and blood vessels. The colouring can, among other things, ensure that fat accumulation in the blood vessels is reduced, which improves the blood circulation. In addition, blueberries contain antioxidants.
