‘Vaccinium Macrocarpon Early Black’ is a cranberry bush. This cranberry is a ground-covering, low-growing fruit species with thin branches and fine leaves that remain green even in winter. It grows best in a sunny spot, but semi-shade is also possible. The plant requires moist soil as it dislikes drought. In June and July, pink flowers appear in clusters at the end of the branches. The berries can be picked from the end of August. The oval, hard berries are first light yellow and then change to a red colour. They taste fresh and sour and are therefore best used in juices, mash and jams. The red cranberries are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants and may prevent some infections such as bladder and urinary tract infections. The plant requires little pruning. A good pruning every four years is enough. This promotes growth and berry production. The cranberry owes its name to the bent stem of the flower, which resembles the neck of a crane. The name craneberry later became cranberry.
